Money-Earning Projects
Planning a big project or trip, and need some supplemental ways to earn funds on top of the Fall Product and Cookie Programs? Troops, service units, or individual girls/Juliettes can apply to hold a money-earning project to help you get there!
About Money-Earning Projects:
- Money-earning projects may be held by troops, service units, or individual girls/Juliettes – of all grade levels. Juliette money-earning projects must be for Highest Awards projects or Girl Scout travel opportunities.
- Troops/Juliettes may participate in additional money-earning activities as long as they have participated (or will participate) in the annual Cookie Program.
How to Plan and Apply for a Money-Earning Project:
1. Start planning your project!
A money-earning project should be a valuable program activity for girls. The experience should give girls the opportunity to learn multiple skills, such as budgeting, goal setting, customer relations, good business practices, and public relations. Money-earning projects should be decided upon with girl input and planning.
Some ideas include: collecting cans/bottles, hosting a community garage sale, selling hand-made items, working with a local restaurant to host a “tip night,”, or hosting an event for other Girl Scouts in your community.
Please note: Girl Scouts may not raise money for other organizations, or sell commercial products. See the Money-Earning Projects Guidelines for more details.
2. Submit your project for approval.
Using the Money-Earning Project Application on the GSGI website, submit the details of your project at least 4 weeks before your start date. This application will ask about the purpose of the project, and the details of when/where it will take place. (Note: The adult volunteer submitting the application must not have any financial restrictions.)
3. Wait for approval!
Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa staff will review your application to make sure that it will be a valuable experience for the girls, meets safety guidelines, and meets the criteria outlined in the Money-Earning Projects Guidelines document.
4. Complete your project.
Once you hear back from Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa that your project is approved, go for it! We hope you have great success fundraising to help girls have amazing experiences.
What’s New:
Here are a few notes on money-earning project ideas that have recently been approved by Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa:
Tip Nights - We have had requests for “Tip Nights” at local restaurants – where organizations can collect a portion of the sales at a restaurant on a particular date - and we’ve updated the guidelines to allow this option. Girls should have an active role in Tip Night events, such as serving, greeting, cleaning-up, or passing out info about Girl Scouts.
Online Fundraising – with adult guidance, girls may use online fundraising sites to raise money for Highest Awards projects.
